BMC Plans 30-Year Takeover Of Aarey Hospital To Expand Public Healthcare In Western Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to take over the operations of Aarey Hospital for a period of 30 years as part of its efforts to strengthen public healthcare infrastructure in Mumbai’s western suburbs.

According to reports, the civic body has initiated the process to bring the hospital under its administration through a long-term arrangement. The proposed takeover is aimed at expanding the municipal healthcare network and improving access to affordable medical services for residents in rapidly growing suburban areas.

Located in Aarey Colony, the hospital is expected to cater to the healthcare needs of people living in Goregaon, Jogeshwari and nearby localities, where rising population levels have increased the demand for quality public medical facilities.

As part of the proposal, the BMC plans to modernise the hospital by upgrading its infrastructure and enhancing its medical capabilities. The proposed improvements are expected to include expanded treatment capacity, better healthcare facilities and the introduction of additional specialised medical services.

Officials believe the move will also help reduce the patient burden on nearby municipal hospitals, many of which currently handle large volumes of patients from Mumbai’s western suburbs. By integrating Aarey Hospital into its healthcare system, the civic body aims to create another fully functional public hospital capable of providing both routine and emergency medical care.

Reports indicate that discussions on the proposed transfer have been underway for some time, with authorities evaluating the legal, financial and administrative aspects of the arrangement. The proposed 30-year tenure is expected to provide the BMC with adequate time to invest in long-term infrastructure upgrades and operational improvements.

The initiative forms part of the BMC’s broader strategy to expand healthcare services across Mumbai through new hospitals, modernisation of existing facilities and the addition of strategically located medical institutions. Once the takeover is finalised, Aarey Hospital is expected to become an integral part of the city’s municipal healthcare network, improving access to treatment, diagnostics and emergency services for residents in the western suburbs.
