Mumbai Railways Explore Underground Expansion To Decongest Overcrowded Local Train Network

In a move aimed at addressing chronic overcrowding on Mumbai’s suburban rail system, officials are evaluating the feasibility of introducing underground railway corridors across key sections of the city’s busiest routes.

The proposal focuses on easing pressure on both the Central and Western railway lines, with potential underground stretches being studied between CSMT and Kalyan on the Central line, and Churchgate to Virar on the Western line. The initiative comes as surface-level expansion becomes increasingly constrained due to limited urban space and dense infrastructure along existing corridors.

The overarching objective is to improve commuter safety, reduce congestion, and offer a more comfortable travel experience for millions of daily passengers who depend on the suburban rail network.

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is currently examining specific segments for underground development. Among the key areas under consideration is the Churchgate–Mumbai Central stretch, where an underground alignment is being studied. Additionally, plans include the possibility of introducing extra railway lines between CSMT and Parel to improve operational capacity and reduce bottlenecks.

Although the project remains at a preliminary planning stage, officials believe that shifting select sections underground could significantly ease congestion on existing lines. It may also help reclaim surface space in densely populated parts of the city, offering broader urban planning benefits.

If implemented, the underground expansion could mark one of the most significant upgrades to Mumbai’s suburban railway network in decades, potentially transforming daily commuting patterns. However, detailed feasibility studies, cost assessments, and technical evaluations are still underway before any final decision is made.

The initiative reflects growing pressure on city infrastructure and the need for long-term solutions to support Mumbai’s rapidly increasing commuter demand.
